In 1901, Alfred Nobel invented the awards because he wanted to leave a better legacy. This is because he invented dynamite and didn’t want to go down in history as the man who was responsible for millions of deaths and injuries. The awards have been handed out 49 times since they were made; there have been years where they were not handed out due to wars. The winners of the prizes each won 10 million swedish krona, converted to U.S. dollars. That’s around 900,000 dollars. Every year the prizes get held in Stockholm, Sweden this is because Alfred Nobel wanted them to be held there every year. The Norwegian Nobel committee decides who gets the prizes; there are 5 members each appointed by the Norwegian parliament.
