Bieber’s Bad Blood
April 18, 2023
For quite a few years, people have suspected there was a feud between Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez. Only recently has it been eradicated by Gomez who asked for everyone to stop sending Bieber “negativity.” This is a record of everything the celebrities have publicly said about each other over the years.
2011
At this time, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were dating and one of their fans was none other than Hailey Baldwin (now Bieber). She fangirled in one tweet, “I don’t care what anyone says but Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez together is the definition of a teenage dream! #word.”
2012
Hailey made another tweet about the then-couple around the time of the Oscars. “I gotta say I was really looking forward to seeing what color coordination Jelena was gonna do for this year’s VF party.. #sigh #ohwell,” (Glamour).
Hailey also called Gomez “beyond flawless” and gushed about her “perfect relationship” with Justin, according to US Weekly.
2019
After Gomez released her single “Lose You to Love Me,” Hailey posted Summer Walker and Jhené Aiko’s song “I’ll Kill You” in her Instagram story (US Weekly). This brought rumors that Hailey’s story was a “response” to Selena’s song, which Hailey instantly shot down and called “complete BS.”
After this incident, Gomez asked her followers to be “kind”, an implied defense towards Hailey.
2020
In January 2020, Madison Beer, Gomez’s friend, was seen dining with Hailey in Los Angeles while Gomez was at the same restaurant celebrating the release of her new album. Elle reported that after that night, a rumor spread that the three got into a disagreement at the restaurant, which Beer denied. Beer began to receive backlash after Gomez unfollowed her on Instagram. “These rumors are gettin insane. I just had dinner with my friend Hailey of ten years. And that’s it? How is that a crime? I love Selena… Always have,” Beer posted. “And I would literally never in a million years try to upset her??? This is just mean and unnecessary and nothing happened. It was just a coincidence, you’re bullying me for no reason…”
Gomez refollowed Beer and commented on her post. “This is disgusting reading all of this. This wasn’t intentional whatsoever. I’m so disappointed that people would speak to someone like this,” Gomez wrote, per Elle. “I have known Madison since she was a baby and watched her continue to become the woman she is. There is no issue.”
2022
Hailey spoke on the tension between her and Gomez on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast in September. “I can say, period, point blank, I was never with him when he was in a relationship with anybody — that’s the end of it,” confirming she never dated Justin at the same time as Gomez.
Hailey also denied having any interpersonal issues with Gomez and said that they had talked since she married Justin in 2018. “It’s all respect, it’s all love,” she said. “That’s also why I feel like if everybody on our side knows what happened and we’re good and we could walk away from it with clarity and respect, then that’s fine. Which has brought me a lot of peace and I’m like, ‘Hey, we know what happened.'” After the episode came out, Bieber began to get backlash which Gomez addressed in a TikTok live. “I think some of the things that I don’t even need to be aware of are just vile and disgusting,’ Gomez said during a TikTok Live a day after the podcast was released. “And it’s not fair, and no one ever should be spoken to in the manner that I’ve seen.”
2023
In February, Hailey posted a video with two friends, one being Kendall Jenner, to a popular audio saying: “I’m not saying she deserved it, but I’m saying God’s timing is always right.” Fans linked the video to recent body-shaming of Gomez about gaining weight, though Bieber denied the theory. “I never comment on this type of thing but we were just having a girls night and did a random Tik Tok sound for fun. It’s not directed at anyone.” In a fan’s video about the theory, Gomez commented: “It’s ok! I don’t let these things get me down! Be nice to everyone! X.”
On February 22, a viral fan theory linked a photo of Kylie Jenner and Hailey’s eyebrows to a post of Gomez’s, in which she worried her brows were over-laminated (Glamour). Kylie commented on the video saying the claim was “reaching” and she meant “no shade towards Selena.” Gomez agreed and called herself a fan of Kylie. The same day, Gomez commented “I love you” on a video defending her and calling Kylie and Hailey “mean girls” and “nepo babies.”
The next day, February 23, a now-deleted TikTok resurfaced from 2017 showed Hailey making a gagging gesture at the mention of Taylor Swift. Quick to defend her bestie, Gomez commented, “So sorry, my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game.”
On an Instagram live, Gomez announced her decision to take a break from social media. “I’m so blessed. I have the best friends, the best fans in the whole world, and I just couldn’t be happier. I’m good,” she said. “I love who I am. And, yeah. I’m going to be taking a second from social media ’cause it’s… this is a little silly. I’m 30. I’m too old for this.”
Most recently, on March 24, Gomez continued to stand by Hailey after she told her she was “receiving death threats and such hateful negativity.” Gomez called for all the hate to end stating, “This isn’t what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying. I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want this all to stop.”
