Senior Shaylee Castro has her day filled with the sound of music. Five out of her seven school periods are in choir with Mrs. Schroeder.
“I’m in two freshman choirs as a member and a mentor. I sing about 4-5 hours a day if I don’t skip,” she says with a giggle. When asked if this has made her better, she said yes.
“It’s a small difference, but I definitely notice it. If you do something a lot, you’ll get better.” Castro remarks. I asked how she got into this position because being in all five choirs is honestly pretty unheard of, especially since the only non-choir classes she takes are economics and English.
“Well, a lot of people take multiple their senior year, and they also mentor in this one or that one, so it’s not really uncommon to be taking multiple choirs. I had independent study, so I was just, like, okay, I might as well hang out in the choir room or in the office. And Mrs. Schroeder was just like, ‘Oh Shaylee, do you wanna sing?’ So, now I’m just in all of them.”
For a breakdown of the choirs she’s in, she goes to Concert Choir, which is a boys and girls choir that she gets to go to festivals and competitions with; Barlow Sound, which is an advanced choir that’s more community-based singing; Advanced Treble Choir, which is an advanced choir, Treble Choir, which is entry-level, and Barlow Choir. Castro partakes in all of these choirs, as well as their performances.
She mentioned that it wasn’t possible to change between the performances, so she had to sing in her black dress the entire time and that it was hard to stand up for the duration of the performances due to the fact that she was always on the go. Clearly, Shaylee Castro’s dedication to music and commitment to singing in Barlow’s choirs overshadows her packed schedule. Her passion for singing not only fills up her schedule, but it spreads through her and enables her to share her passion with younger students.
