Spring break is the ever-needed week off from school largely spent catching up on sleep; however, in addition to feeling rested, take the time off to venture out in the community! Whether rain or shine, here is a list of activities near home that fully embrace springtime in Oregon.
Portland Japanese Garden
Although open all year long, mid-March marks the beginning of cherry blossom season and the prime time to visit the Portland Japanese Garden. The mossy greens and vibrant pinks of various trees, flowers, and plants offer a much-needed contrast after a drab, rain-filled, winter. Bring a camera or phone to take plenty of photos but don’t forget a jacket!
The Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival
The Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival may be further away than other local attractions, but it’s worth the hour-long drive to Woodburn. Along with 40 acres of brightly colored tulips, the farm has various photo opportunities, an area dedicated to young kids, fresh-cut flowers for sale, and hot air balloon rides that are weather permitting. This year, the festival is open from March 22nd to May 5th, and tickets are only for sale online, so ensure you secure them before your trip!
Food Carts on SW 257th, and many more! Both indoor and outdoor seating are commonly offered.
Crown Point Vista House
Located along I-84 in the Columbia River Gorge, Crown Point is a scenic Oregon State Park perfect for a day trip or a brief stop on a trip down the Gorge. Along with an elevated, picture-perfect perspective 636 feet above the highway, the Vista House is a Historical Museum, coffee shop, and gift shop.
Sugar Pine
Sugar Pine is a combination of a drive-up and sit-down restaurant with an extensive menu containing soft-serve ice cream, sandwiches, soups, and salads located in Troutdale, just off the Sandy River. Although the food is both high quality and delicious, Sugar Pine is best known for their elaborate soft-serve sundaes which you can customize yourself or order directly off the menu. Keep an eye on their Instagram @sugarpinedrivein as their menu is always changing.
The Oregon Zoo
The Oregon Zoo regularly updates animal habitats and visitor areas, making every trip a new experience. Last winter, the rescued endangered eastern black rhino, Jozi, gave birth to a baby rhinoceros, Tamu, who is now three months old and the newest addition to the zoo.
Hidden Falls Hiking Trail
Many hiking trails are an optimal attraction this time of year, but Hidden Falls is a favorite! Just short of a mile, the Hidden Falls Hiking trail is a relatively steep but fully paved path with a clear view of a waterfall. Located in Happy Valley, the trail is accessible from two ends that each connect to neighborhoods that offer further picnic, play, or walking opportunities.
