At the beginning of every school year, our counselors work extra hard for each student to have the best experience. This September, the five counselors, Shae Morris, Erin Boelow, Paul Quirke, Oscar Rethwill, and Molly Ninneman, will be meeting all of their freshmen students, doing senior meetings, and talking with the new students assigned to them.

Every year, Barlow has around 300 new freshmen coming into the school. This  October, to help make all the new students feel comfortable in the school, the counselors will have meetings with the freshmen, introduce themselves, and show them what it is they do at SBHS. During the freshmen meetings, students will learn about all the resources, extracurricular activities, clubs, and more that Barlow offers. Through SchooLinks, freshmen can get a glimpse of the high school experience and an idea of how they want their future to look. If you want to make an appointment with your counselor, you can talk to the receptionist in the counseling office to set up an appointment. If you also want to get an extra head start at planning the future, you should talk to Tia Moloney in the College and Career Center.

After graduation, you are given a choice, but for many students, that choice can be difficult. Our counselors will be meeting with all the 2025 graduates to give them a little boost for the next fall. They will also make sure that you are on path to graduate, and have enough, and correct credits earned. Whether it’s college, trade school, an internship, or going straight to work, you can ask your counselor to help you get to where you want to be. They will be able to show you different paths you can take, and what is available to you.

All 1,800 students at Sam Barlow High School need a counselor that they can go to for help. Depending on your last name, you will be assigned to one of the five counselors. You may already know who your counselor is, but all students should double-check their Studentvue, because this year, the last names have been shifted, and some people may have changed counselors.

You can see that our counselors put in a lot of work here at Sam Barlow High School. And that’s just the beginning of the school year! Next time you are in the counseling office, or even just walking by, give your counselor a thank you for all the hard work they do for our school.
