At Sam Barlow, students are building the future in Josh Hardy’s Construction Trades 1 class. This class will be an exciting opportunity for the students of Barlow, and it will emphasize hands-on skills and real-world applications. Through engaging projects and industry partnerships, students will gain practical experience that prepares them for careers in construction.

Students are expected to have first completed the class Intro to Woodworking and have at least sophomore status before taking this section of Woodworking. This will be your prerequisite class, so you will be introduced to many of the different types of equipment and tools available to you in the shop. Instead of immediately introducing you to more complicated projects, each assignment will progressively lead to creating a comfortable learning environment and skill development. Throughout the course, students engage in hands-on activities that drive home important concepts regarding strength and stability in the construction of pieces.

Activities in Construction Trades 1 are focused on specific labs and exercises that emphasize carpentry, wall framing, roof framing, tiling, and more! When asked what Hardy loves about this new class, he expressed his excitement about the lab system and the go-at-your-own-pace nature of the course. The class utilizes resources from a company called Paxton/Patterson, which offers a range of career-focused materials to help students delve into their passions and explore future opportunities.

Hardy explains, “We will be having guest speakers coming from the various construction companies we have partnered with.” Such field professionals will enlighten the students on important details regarding the job description, what they make, what they normally do daily, and how their work is integrated at the job site. Their first-hand experience will inform not just the many different opportunities available in construction but also to encourage attendees toward the many varied career paths for which they may apply. The participants will be afforded an excellent opportunity to discuss valuable points, ask numerous questions, and go away with a much more informed view of what it takes to succeed in this dynamic industry.

Hardy’s Construction Trades 1 class creates a lively environment where students learn valuable skills while exploring their passion for craftsmanship. They gain confidence for their future careers through hands-on projects and exposure to different trades. Hardy’s enthusiasm and support foster a space where aspiring builders can grow, shaping their skills and paths ahead. Ultimately, this class not only prepares students for careers in construction but also instills a sense of pride and accomplishment in their work. With a strong foundation in these essential skills, students are set to thrive in a constantly evolving industry.
