During the week of October 14 -18, Barlow showed appreciation for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pink to the volleyball and football games. This week was the last home game for both volleyball and football, so it was also senior night. Some people showed extra appreciation by wearing pink throughout the whole week and to the Barlow pep rally assembly.
October has been known as breast cancer awareness month for almost 40 years. People who fought breast cancer are celebrated by parades, wearing pink, displaying pink ribbons, business events, Run for the Cure marathons, and many more. 1 in 8 women in the U.S. alone are diagnosed with Breast cancer once in their lifetime. Even if you are not diagnosed with cancer, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also a very important month for people who have experienced a loved one who went through breast cancer or passed away from it. It gives them a chance to celebrate friends and family who have gone through such a difficult journey. The Barlow High School students and staff wanted to show our support to those with Breast cancer or those who have survived it by having a pink week.
On October 18, Barlow’s student council and leadership put together a pep assembly with many fun games and dances. All students were told to wear pink to show their appreciation, support, and spirit. All the current fall sports had representatives from their team play a game for everyone to watch. Another event they had at this assembly was having the varsity football players do a cheer dance with the cheerleaders. This was something that made this assembly very unique.
On the night of October 18, our varsity football team played Reynolds. In the beginning, it looked like it was going to be a tough game for Barlow, but the entire student section showed all of their support and our players pulled through and won Barlow’s second varsity football game of the season. Throughout the game, some of the student council students would throw T-shirts and candy to the students who were cheering the loudest. This game wasn’t a normal football game as it was the last home game and also senior night for the football, cheer, and dance teams. All of these seniors were introduced over the loudspeaker with the family and friends they decided to bring with them. The volleyball team also had their senior night this week, every senior on the volleyball team got a gift basket, balloons, and flowers.
Breast cancer survivors have gone through something terrible and difficult to get through, but they made it through, so now they should know they can get through anything. To people with breast cancer: all of you are stronger than you know. Keep powering through and give it your all.
