Jimmy Carter was the 39th president of the United States of America. He served his presidency with pride and passion, however, on the 29th of December, 2024, former president Carter passed away at the remarkable age of 100. After his passing, many Americans are mourning the loss of this wonderful president, and are beginning to look back at the legacy he left behind.
Carter accepted one of the most astonishing awards one can be given, the Nobel Peace Prize. Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his attempt to bring global conflicts to a close. With his efforts, Carter helped Israel and Egypt come to the conclusion of a peace treaty. His goal was not only to bring a peaceful state globally but to also show his commitment to human rights.
During his presidency, Carter accomplished many things that have strongly impacted the living conditions and status of the United States. The first accomplishment was excusing the Vietnam War evaders, which was especially incredible as it was done the second day he was in office. He successfully signed the Panama Canal treaties which bestowed control of the Panama Canal to Panama and made many efforts to conserve energy and improve the education department by signing bills. Even after he left office, he still managed to keep engaged in political departments. He wrote 59 books about politics and taught at University of Emory in Atlanta as a distinguished professor for 37 years.
Carter was born in Plains, Georgia, on October 1, 1924. He grew up in a small town and later joined the United States Navy Submarine Service where he served as a nuclear engineer. During World War ll he was the executive officer in armed forces and helped fix and repair the submarines for battle. He served in the Navy from 1946-1953. After his time in the Navy, Carter decided to jump into one of the spots for Georgia state senator and later became governor. After his time in these seats, Carter ran for and was elected president in 1977 and served until 1981. Even after his time in office had come to a close, Carter still supported human rights and religious freedom.
Carter’s funeral took place on January 9th in Washington D.C. After the funeral he was later buried in his hometown, Plains, Georgia. His funeral was especially unique since all five living former presidents had attended, including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. Many other people very high in the United States government also attended. Phyllis Adams sang “Amazing Grace” and everybody gathered to mourn the passing of the former president.
