Attending a sporting event is an exciting experience. When you attend, whether to watch family or friends play or play in them yourself, it can ruin your experience when people don’t follow expectations. To ensure that these sporting events remain enjoyable to watch and participate in, Barlow has some expectations to ensure you have a fun and safe time.
Some expectations include:
- Respect Towards Everybody. Show respect to players, coaches, officials, and other spectators. This includes never booing or yelling at officials or opposing players. Be respectful of other students and adults attending the game.
- Cheer Positively. Support both teams, including not yelling out rude cheers to other players and teams.
- Focus on the Game. Don’t be on your phone, not watching or supporting the event.
- Practice Good Sportsmanship. Acknowledge good plays by both teams.
- Stay Seated. Stay in your seat unless you need something. It can be rude and distracting to other spectators, players, and the teams.
- Follow the Rules. Adhere to venue and event policies, including prohibiting outside food/drinks.
- Be Punctual. Arrive on time and avoid disruptions by moving during breaks or stoppage times.
- Clean Up After Yourself. Dispose of trash and keep the area tidy. This helps keep the place nice and the janitors less work.
Sam Barlow High School expects everyone to follow these expectations as well as possible. There are consequences for not following the expectations, which include getting kicked out of the event, and if you do not follow these rules, you will be banned from future events. Kathleen Gloss, who has attended many of Sam Barlow’s sporting events, says, “In the future, I would like to see more spectators at girls’ sporting events and be respectful because there is too much negative, and we need to be more positive. This includes following the OSAA regulations, and you can have an enjoyable experience.” No one wants to go to a sporting event and not have a good experience because of someone’s behavior. Negative behavior, like yelling rude cheers or dirting the place, can disrupt the spirit of sportsmanship at these high school sporting events, ruining your experience.
