The Sam Barlow Mountain Club is a recreational ski and snowboarding club run by yearbook teacher Mr. Holzbach that goes up to Mount Hood Meadows every Thursday, starting February 6 through February 27, and accepts all skill levels. They leave Barlow as soon as possible after school ends and then return to school around 10 PM.
This club has been running for years. Mr. Holzbach was a part of the recreational ski club at Barlow back in the 80s when he went to school here. He then started advising it about 15 years ago. Mr. Holzbach goes up to the mountain with the club alongside two other advisors, Natasha Rubens and Lynn Hollenbeck. There are currently about 40 kids who go up to the mountain, about 60% of them being snowboarders, while the other 40% are skiers.
The club used to go up to the mountains on Saturday, but it was so crowded at Meadows, and the traffic caused them to take longer to get there, raising transportation prices. They decided in 2012 to switch to Thursday nights when there was less traffic, so they got there faster. Because of this, they were able to lower the prices, and more students began to join. Now, it’s 100 dollars for transportation, and lift tickets are about $150. You can also add lessons and rentals if you need them. Ordering will close on the last day of January, so it’s not too late to join! Talk to Mr. Holzbach in room 701 if you have any questions.
