A Day Without Immigrants
On February 3rd, the “A Day Without Immigrants” protest broke out nationwide, highlighting the importance of immigrant workers and their impact on the American economy and communities, as well as showing the devastation and concern for the mass deportations and ICE raids throughout the country.
A similar protest and boycott took place on February 16, 2017, after President Trump’s plans to build a border wall and potentially deport undocumented immigrants were announced. A campaign on social media called for all immigrant workers to stay home and for children not to attend school for an entire week. Many businesses across the country have closed in solidarity with the movement. On 182nd and Stark in Gresham, police estimated that around 150 people had gathered in protest, marching and waving Mexican flags. Several cities in Texas have participated in the protest. The day prior, a protest of around 20,000 people in Houston caused streets to shut down for hours. The FIEL Houston, an immigrant-led civil rights organization, organized the rally. Citizens of Los Angeles, a city where the ICE raids are the heaviest, stood in the lanes of the 101 freeway. Some went as far as climbing to the top of traffic lights and waving their flags. For an entire week, protests on immigration have sprung up in Los Angeles and, for the most part, have been peaceful. That was until a protester, on February 7th, was stabbed and another arrested during a high school protest.
The 50501 Movement
Nationwide protests broke out as people began protesting against President Trump and his administration. The 50501 movement took place in all 50 states as groups marched to their state capitol with the protest lasting for one day. The movement began with the slogan “We The People Reject Project 2025,” to help fight to protect democracy and fight Fascism. During the time leading up to the protest, accounts on BlueSky posted information on what and why the movement was happening and urged people to act. However, many comments under the posts stated that it was all a scam, luring people in to get arrested and stating that the movement wasn’t happening at all. This was eventually proven wrong by several individuals calling into their state’s capitols and confirming the event’s authenticity.
Not My President
Presidents Day, February 17th, 2025, rallies in all 50 states emerged, protesting against President Trump, Elon Musk, and the illegal actions of the Trump administration. This was the second rally organized by the 50501 organization, with more planned for the future. Protesters stood outside the Capitol building waving an up-side-down American flag and holding signs with text saying: “No One Voted for Elon Musk.”
