Students often believe the campus monitors are intimidating or are looking for ways to get them in trouble. In reality, they look out for you and want to make you a better student.
The first campus monitor is Mrs. Kathleen Gloss. She has worked at Barlow for about four months but has worked in the district for 25 years at Gresham High School. In her free time, she calls herself a “craftaholic.” She loves to do things like scrapbooking, paper goods, knitting, and anything she sees on Pinterest that she thinks she can accomplish. She has been married to her husband for about 40 years and has two daughters. One has her own business in Colorado; the other is a nurse in Bend. Mrs. Gloss loves to be outside, soaking up the sun and going crazy in her vast garden. Her favorite part about the Barlow community is the excellent crew she works with and the fantastic students. One thing she would like to tell students is that she is not a fan of lying. She would rather students look her in the face, tell her the truth, and communicate.
The second campus monitor is Mr. Marques Hudson. Mr. Hudson has been working at Barlow for three years but has worked in the district for seven years, previously at Gresham High. He is one of the girl’s basketball coaches, which doesn’t leave him with much free time, but when he does have some time to himself, he exercises and plays basketball. Hudson has two stepkids who play volleyball and basketball. This keeps him very busy on his weekends, as they travel to Eugene and Salem often. His favorite part about the Barlow community is how tight-knit it is. He loves to see former Barlow players or even students coming back to watch games. Coach Johnson coached his brother when he was younger, and now they are both coaching basketball side by side, which he enjoys. Mr. Hudson does not want students to be scared of his straight face. He is here to help and make students a better student and person.
Damon is another one of our campus monitors at Barlow. He has worked at Barlow for seven years. In his free time, he loves to hang out with his family, including his wife and kids. His kids keep him busy with swimming and dancing, but he also enjoys playing basketball. His favorite part about the Barlow community is how it’s very close-knit. “We have lots of staff that have kids that go here and the history of their parents going here and their grandparents, and that’s pretty nice,” Damon says. He wants students to know that their education is super important and that all of Barlow’s staff are trying to set them up for the future. There are important skills that they can gain from school, like being on time and being responsible.
The last campus monitor spotlight is Rocky. He has worked at Barlow for eight years. He likes to be outdoors and spend time with his wife, kids, and beautiful dog named Archie. Rocky’s favorite thing to do with his family is go outdoors and to the beach. Although Barlow has a big community, it feels small enough that everyone can fit in and feel a part of something. He says, “It’s sort of like a family, you can find your dynamic and where you fit in.” Rocky wants to say he is one of the easiest people to get along with. In his position he likes all students to follow the rules, but if any student has any issues, then just let him know, and they can work it out with him. If anyone is intimidated by him, he says they can ask any of the women wrestlers at Barlow, and they will tell you he is not scary!
