Ten players played on Barlow’s racquetball team during the 2024-2025 season. These players worked hard during their winter season, and most members went to the state and national racquetball competitions.
Nine of the members, Aliya Campbell, Ariana Campbell, Payton Colt, Emmet Ellis, Jayna Leong, Olivia Riggs, Carter Stumbo, Noah Teem, and Alex Velasquez, made it to the state competition which took place from Jan. 29 through Feb. 2 at Cascade Athletic Club in Gresham.
Seven members, including Phoebe Busiek, Ariana Campbell, Colt, Leong, Riggs, Stumbo, and Teem, made it to the national competition, which took place at the Cascade and Multnomah Athletic Clubs in Portland.
Stumbo, who played in both the state and national competitions, said that he preferred playing in the state competition because he was able to play against people closer to his skill level.
“Playing racquetball against players close to your skill level is ten times more fun than winning,” he said.
Other players shared their enthusiasm to be playing against other people nationwide. Competitors play by their rank within their team, with the sixth and lower-ranked players all playing in the same competition.
During round one, everyone plays in the Gold bracket. If you win, you continue in the Gold bracket, but if you lose, you move on to the Red bracket. If you lose your second match in the Gold bracket, you move and play in the Blue bracket. If you lose your first match in the Red bracket, then you move to the White bracket. If you lose at any point after the points previously mentioned, then that’s your final placement.
