On April 1, 2025, Barlow invited soon-to-be freshmen to our school. In the gymnasium and cafeteria, young students and their families learned about the extracurriculars and electives they may be interested in.
The gymnasium hosted sports like football, soccer, basketball, tennis, and more, each with a stand including student-athletes to help. The family nights provided chances to learn about Barlow’s sports, allowing students to sign up and discover more in the future. This opportunity showed future high schoolers the kind faces of peers to remember and rely on. There were also stands for extracurricular activities and clubs such as band, choir, theatre, Key Club, and many others. Stands like robotics held machinery and projects from their club. They even had a large robot!
In the cafeteria, the Bruin Expo, hosted by the CTE classes, had booths for elective pathways, including woods, metals, art, and marketing. They showcased the projects and creations made in their class, showing the extent of their work. The art pathway showcased their students’ artwork in many different forms: paintings, sculptures, sketches, drawings, and more. Families of 8th graders got to see what their child will learn and grow from, meeting their future teachers and coaches.
To showcase the works of other electives, like Bruin Banner, Culinary, Computer Science, and so many others, the parents had four fifteen-minute sessions to meet their future teachers and visit the classrooms in which their child was most interested. Like a class period, students and families spent time in the classroom listening to the teacher or presenter talk about the curriculum, projects, and other aspects of their elective.
Building early relationships with teachers and future peers is extremely important for young children. In doing so, teachers would be more willing to help and enjoy having them in their classrooms. If you didn’t get a chance to sign up for a club or activity, you’ll have another opportunity in the fall. We hold a club fair at the beginning of the school year to allow students to learn about and gain interest in a sport or extracurricular activity. These are great for developing early learning skills for future jobs or scholarships. Possible varsity athletes must start young and take as many opportunities as possible to grow. If a person is active and well-known in the community in these ways, they are more likely to be appointed to the Student Council.
