Minecraft is a virtual game that took the world by storm. On May 17, 2009, the first edition of the game Minecraft was released to the public and immediately drew many players in. You could usually find people of all ages hooked on this game of survival, creation, and in some cases, destruction. After almost 16 years, Minecraft has become one of the most popular video games in the world. With so many fun experiences and being able to play with friends, it’s no surprise that millions have continued playing this game into 2025. To take a new approach to this interactive gaming experience, Warner Bros has collaborated with Mojang Studios (the creators of Minecraft) to create A Minecraft Movie.
Right when the trailer was released, I knew I wanted to watch the movie, but I was very sceptical of how it would turn out. Trying to make a movie based on a video game is not common; it’s usually the other way around. Minecraft is a very widespread game with endless possibilities for creativity and change, so it had a lot to cover.
With Jack Black starring, it’s no surprise this movie would be very funny. Aside from the funny jokes, I greatly enjoyed the nostalgic approach. From the feeling of panic when the sun sets, and the excitement of finding diamonds in a cave, we see it all in A Minecraft Movie. While I did enjoy many parts of the movie, as a whole, I was slightly disappointed. The creators had such a wide range of possibilities for the film and the direction they went was disappointing. Besides some of the plot I’m not very fond of, I do think the movie was good and worth watching.
Something that many greatly appreciated was a cameo of some of the Minecraft community’s favorite YouTubers, these include DanTDM, Aphamu, Mumbo Jumbo, and LDShadowlady. One of the most popular scenes of the movie is a short cameo of a pig wearing a crown. Many would immediately recognize this as the king of Minecraft, Technoblade, who passed away from cancer in 2022. In the movie, when asked if the pig is some kind of a king by Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Steve (Jack Black) responds by saying, “No, he’s a legend’’. Having this scene really connected many to the film.
Overall, the film was very enjoyable and extremely entertaining. Making this movie was no doubt a major challenge, but it was very well done and one hundred percent worth your time. I recommend this movie for families, teenagers, and all those die-hard Minecraft fans.
