As the 2024-25 school year wraps up, whether it’s your last summer at Barlow or first, it’s time to start planning how the Bruins will spend their summer break. Around the Portland, Oregon area, there are activities that spring to life during our summer months. “Best Place for Summer Fun” by Kylie Asher, included in this issue of the Bruin Banner, has multiple vacation ideas for the Bruins. But while you’re still in town, here are some activities around Portland for your friend group or your family:
Oaks Amusement Park:
Oaks Park stands tall with its roller coasters and thrill rides on the Willamette River’s coast. For over 120 years, it has been the go-to spot for school-age children and families. It hosts annual 4th of July festivals and special preschool ride mornings during the summer. Arcade games, bumper cars, roller skates, mini golf, escape rooms, and snacks will make your day fun for the whole family. Oaks Amusement Park is the cheaper option compared to other parks, and the most local for our Bruins.
7805 SE Oaks Park Way, Portland, OR 97202
Mt Hood Theater:
Just ten minutes from Barlow, the 75-year-old single-screen Mt. Hood Theatre stands. For a cheaper movie option compared to other local movie theatres (5-8 dollars per person), head to Mt. Hood Theatre. The theatre typically shows PG and PG-13 rated movies, like Inside Out 2, Thunderbolts*, Captain America: Brave New World, but you can always find fan favorites at Mt. Hood Theatre.
401 Powell Blvd Gresham, OR 97060
Clackamas Town Center:
With stores from Hot Topic to Barnes & Noble, Clackamas Town Center has a place for everyone to shop. In addition to the stores in the building, bungee trampolines, a Ferris wheel, and a carousel are located in the food court for all to enjoy. Whether your go-to is fast food like Panda Express and Cinnabon, or fancy like Cheesecake Factory, the mall has meals for all. Spend fun times with the whole friend group at Clackamas Town Center.
12000 SE 82nd Ave, Happy Valley, OR 97086
Columbia River Gorge:
One of Oregon’s most visited tourist spots is the Columbia River Gorge, which has famous hiking trails and waterfalls spanning two states and six counties. Different trails and hiking routes take you to more and more beautiful scenery. Choose from different trails of your liking to spend the day in awe of Oregon’s nature. Even if hiking isn’t your favorite, you can still enjoy Oregon’s nature by driving past waterfalls lining the Columbia River on I-84.
Top Golf:
For an easy golf alternative, Top Golf is fun for all ages. Similar to the game of golf, clubs, balls, and tees are present, but with loud music, giant targets, giant TVs, and hand-crafted food and drinks. At any skill level, you can either bring your own clubs or bring some of your own. With fans, heaters, and covered bays, Top Golf works for any weather conditions. Schedule an upcoming event with Top Golf, and rent out multiple bays for the whole group to enjoy.
