The crowd starts going wild, and fans are screaming for their favorite K-pop group HUNTR/X. The fans are fanning over their favorite idols, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Now there are five minutes before the show starts. But the idols are found on an airplane. How will they get to their show to perform?
Kpop Demon Hunters was a great success in the world, sharing its Kpop style music and Korean mythology. Maggie Kang came up with the idea of Kpop Demon Hunters and became the creator and director of the movie. Maggie is a Sony animator, having worked at DreamWorks before. The movies she would work on include The Lego Ninjago Movie, Puss in Boots, Rise of the Guardians. In an article called “Geeks Out,” Michele Kirichanskaya interviews Maggie Kang, asking where the idea came from. Maggie says, “I always wanted to see an animated film set in Korean culture,” then she would later on make Kpop Demon Hunters in honor of Korean culture. What she did was take two parts of Korean culture and make them the best she could.
The movie has many songs that made it popular. Children, teens, and even adults are listening and singing the songs. One of the songs, “Soda Pop,” is very catchy with its main chorus. “Soda Pop is lowkey unhinged-and I love it,” says The Teen Mag. Some people think that it is overhyped, overheard, or even annoying, but it is one of many songs that many people love, sing, and listen to. During each song, it tells the emotion how the character feels in the moment, whether they are feeling sad, happy, pure anger, or telling a story within the song to learn more about the character. The lyrics also mean so much for the characters outer and inner image of themself. The songs all have different meanings. If you sit and listen to each song by HUNTR/X or the Saja Boys, you can hear the meaning of their goal, solution, and their feelings about themself.
When watching this movie, you see the story being built by K-pop idols. How the real K-pop industry goes is starting out and auditioning for a group, going through practice, and then being a K-pop star! Groups like BTS, BLACKPINK, Twice, and many others had to go through those steps. Many people have a wide variety of opinions on K-pop, but it is still a growing industry with many groups of people with new or old styles of K-pop. Twice did a remix on one of HUNTR/X’s songs, “Take Down,” for the movie. Not only is it Twice’s Chaeyoung, Jeoungyeon, and Jihyo who sang the remix, but they made it to their style, using their voices to make a beat, and the harmony that they sang together made the song more emotional when watching the end credits or listening to the song alone.
Most of the characters had a voice actor and a singer. Rumi, Mira, Zoey, Jinu, and some other minor characters have a main voice actor and a singer. The actor acts for the character, and the singer would sing all the songs for that character. For a movie that is like a musical, there are a bunch of people who were in this movie. There are 18 people who all had either a big or small part in the movie. wany being very famous actors and actresses. Some of the big names are Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, Lee Byung-Hun, SungWon Cho, and EJAE. These actors played parts of the movie that were memorable to the audience, and hopefully to them, too. Even if they said very little in the movie, their characters would always be remembered in this movie. The songwriters included EJAE (who was also Rumi’s Singer), Mark Sonnenblick, Danny Chung, and Ido. These are the people who wrote these great, catchy songs. Sony Animations were the animators for this catchy movie, while Netflix bought the movie and posted it on their streaming service.
A movie is never a movie without characters, plot, and setting. Celine, who is an ex-demon hunter, tells us how the world is corrupted by Gwi-ma, who is a fire demon that is sending away demons to feed on human souls to keep him alive, and the only way they can stop Gwi-ma is to make a barrier that keeps the demons away. The first generation of demon hunters created the Honmoon, keeping the demons away from eating the souls of humans. Each generation of demon hunters had been told the story and why it is important to keep the Honmoon sealed as well as possible. The way Celine keeps it sealed is to build HUNTR/X, built around her friend’s daughter, who is Rumi. The movie takes us to modern-day, where we see our main characters, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey performing in their show. The big problem for Celine was keeping her friend’s legacy alive through Rumi. But Rumi’s mom is human, and her father was a demon. Celine would tell Rumi to hide the demon patterns until they can find a way to finally find a way to fully seal the Honmoon, hoping that would heal Rumi’s patterns. In the end, it all falls to the main three to defeat Gwi-ma.
