This month, the science department recognized Shelby Lund for her academic excellence and commitment. She was recognized by Mr. Bridgnell, who teaches her AP Chemistry class. Shelby is a senior, and she is in two science classes this year. She is enrolled in AP Chemistry and AP Biology. “For the last 3 years, I’ve taken a greater interest in not just chemistry but also science as a whole. There is so much around us that we don’t even know is science, but everything has a purpose, and that is what I think is so unique learning about,” Shelby said in response to how long she’s had an interest in chemistry and why. Her favorite part of chemistry is performing labs. “There are so many different combinations you get to experiment with while learning how different compounds combine and react to each other and why.”
Shelby also discussed why she loves biology. “Biology to me is more than just science; it is learning about how every living thing around us functions, keeping human, animal, and plant cells alive. Biology is a key factor to understanding life, and being able to understand how all the parts work together is amazing.” Her favorite part about her AP biology class is the people that she works with in class, “Collaborating with peers that have the same interest is an incomparable experience that makes the class so much fun.”
Bridgnell has said that he enjoys having Shelby in class and that she has a very positive attitude toward her assignments and her peers. Shelby was also enrolled in Chemistry last year with Bridgnell, and returned to his AP Chemistry class this year because she is interested in chemistry and enjoys all the different labs. “Shelby is always focused on using her problem-solving skills on her class work, and she works with a positive mindset.” He also states how Shelby is already excelling in his AP Chemistry course this year. Bridgnell says that she is pretty advanced in her problem-solving, specifically in her stoichiometry. Shelby’s AP biology teacher, Mrs. Toptchian, says that she is a wonderful student with a positive attitude. “Shelby enters class each day with a bright attitude and a genuine eagerness to learn. She is extremely smart, and their quick understanding of concepts shines through in their work. Beyond their own success, they are always willing to help classmates, offering explanations and encouragement that lift the whole class.” Mrs. Toptchian has said that she’s noticed that Shelby is enthusiastic in class. “She approaches assignments with diligence, asks thoughtful questions, and actively participates in discussions, showing a true passion for science. Her steady effort, intelligence, kindness, and positive energy not only help her succeed but also inspire those around them. It is clear that their dedication and abilities will continue to carry them far.”
“I’ve always planned on taking science classes in high school because it’s a big part of the medical field, but I never thought I would enjoy it so much. Nothing can compare to learning how living things function, whether it’s humans, animals, or plants.” After she graduates from high school, Shelby plans on being an ultrasound technician. An ultrasound technician is a healthcare professional who uses an ultrasound machine to see internal organs and structures in the body to diagnose and monitor many different medical conditions. This field requires lots science, like biology and anatomy, leading Shelby to have taken lots of science classes throughout her high school career.
