For many students at Barlow, the idea of college feels both exciting and intimidating. Between applications, scholarships, and figuring out what your future is going to look like, it can be a lot to take in. Luckily, teachers and counselors are here to help and make sure students know what opportunities there are for them. Many programs help Bruins get a head start. An article written by David Marcus, a college admissions coach and a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, explains, “The application process is all about discovering who you are.” He encourages students to focus on self-discovery and finding the best “fit” rather than just stressing about college admissions.
Students are encouraged to start preparing as early as they can. Exploring interests like joining a club, a sport, or simply meeting new people can help you learn what you want your future to look like. One of the most valuable opportunities available is dual enrollment, which allows students to take college-level classes while still in high school. Dual enrollment gives students the chance to earn college credits, experience more advanced coursework, and save money once they graduate and move on to the next chapter. In addition, Advanced Placement (AP) and honors classes help students strengthen their skills and make their college applications stand out.

A significant element of college opportunity is ensuring the financial path is clear. Financial aid is also a big part of your college journey. Many students don’t realize how many scholarships and programs are available to help cover the cost of tuition. When asked what kind of resources are open to students to help them get ready for college, Mrs. Molony, the College Coordinator at Barlow, said, “There are a lot of resources to help you find the best fit. On the Sam Barlow webpage, you can find a list of local schools and comprehensive scholarships.” If you want more information, visit the College and Career Center to talk to Mrs. Molony or Mrs. Collins.
The activities that you engage in are crucial for self-discovery and for building a strong, unique profile that colleges value. Counselors emphasize that meaningful involvement in an activity is often far more impactful than just having a long list of fleeting memberships. In addition to credit-earning opportunities, Barlow encourages students to engage in experiences that build a compelling and unique profile for college admissions. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a great resource. It is a free form that students fill out to be considered for federal financial aid for college or career school. Completing this form allows students to earn grants, scholarships, and work-study programs.
High school is a great time to explore your passions, set goals, and prepare for life after graduation. Whether a Bruin decides to attend a four-year college, community college, or trade school, there are countless paths to success and many resources to get there. The focus at Barlow is on helping students define their own version of success and then equipping them with the academic tools, financial knowledge, and personal guidance needed to achieve it. The goal is to ensure that every Bruin graduates ready to take on their next big challenge with confidence.
