Girls Varsity Basketball Team 2022-2023

Winter break was relaxing for most but for student athletes, not so much. Both the boys and girls varsity basketball teams competed in a tournament over break and it went well.

The girls competed in the POA (Portland Office Automation) Holiday Classic which took place between December 28-30, 2022 at a variety of schools such as Franklin, Grant, Lincoln, and McDaniel High Schools. They competed in the Platinum Bracket which includes schools like La Jolla Country Day, Beverton and Sherwood.

The girls won their bracket last school year, but unfortunately they lost in the first round 60-85 to the Southern Californian Team, La Jolla Country Day, who has Arizona committed players, Jada Williams and Breya Cunningham. Even though the girls lost in the first round, they still ended up winning the consolation bracket. They beat Willamette 71-47 and Lakeridge 52-44. Annie Koenig and Kennedie Shuler were a part of the all-tournament team along with Keelie O’Hollaren from Lakeridge and Brynn Smith from Willamette.

The tournament also has JV and JV2 brackets. In the red bracket, our girl’s JV team played Westview and won 68-14 then moved on to play Benson in which they beat them 66-43. They moved on to the championship in their bracket and won in an exciting victory over La Jolla Country Day 45-42.

The boys competed in the Les Schwab Invitational which took place between December 26-30 2022 at Liberty High School. There was only one bracket, but it included schools like Sierra Canyon Jesuit, and Duncanville. The boys lost in the first round to the tournament champions West Linn 60-87. They couldn’t pull through in the next game against Roosevelt when they lost by 5, with a score of 71-76, however they did end up beating Lake Oswego 78-73 and when they played Grant the bruins got 77-71.

Jalen Atkins was third in the tournament for average points per game with 25 points. West Linn’s Jackson Shelstad was number 1 with 33 points and Lake Oswego’s Winters Grady with 27 points. Jake Stump had a 68.4% field goal making 13/19 shots coming in at 4th in the tournament. Jimmy Oladoken from Sierra Canyon hit 13/14 shots with a 92.9 field goal percentage, the top percentage in the tournament. Jase Richardson from Bishop Gorman made 11/13 shots for an 84.6 field goal percentage coming in 2nd for the tournament. Cameron Barnes from Duncanville had a 68.8% making 22/32 of his shots. Mason Bierbrauer averaged 1.5 blocks per game tied for 3rd for most blocks per game with Payton Roth.
