Barlow once again welcomed alumni back for Homecoming Week. This year’s homecoming theme, “Decades,” was announced on the @wearebarlow Instagram account on September 12, 2023. Soon after, the theme for the homecoming dance and football game was announced as Neon Out. Spirit Week dress-up days started out with Color Wars on Monday: underclassmen wore black, and upperclassmen wore grey. Tuesday was Rhyme and Reason, and Wednesday was Eminem day where students and teachers were encouraged to wear baggy shirts and pants, a chain, and a baseball cap. Thursday was Decades Day when each grade dressed as their assigned decade. Freshmen dressed in the 2010s, Sophomores in the 2000s, Juniors in the 1990s, and Seniors in the 1980s. Friday students had no school.

The theme for the other sports games during the week of September 25-30 was Blue Out. Games with this theme included Girl’s Soccer vs Lakeridge, Boy’s Soccer vs Lake Oswego, and water polo games. To encourage students to participate in the themes for the football game, Barlow Football sold neon apparel such as beanies and hoodies in a variety of neon colors at lunch and various sporting events leading up to the game.

Friday, the Bruins hosted the David Douglas Scottsmen for our homecoming football game. For half-time entertainment, the Bruin cheerleaders and dance team performed. Along with that, leadership put on an entertaining class dance that used music from the decades that matched each grade. To end halftime, homecoming royalty homecoming was announced, with cousins Maggie and Joel Moffat winning. As the second half of the game went on, the excitement in the stadiums grew, and the Bruins held the lead throughout the entirety of the game. The game ended with a final score of Bruins-66 and Scots-14.

After the game, Barlow hosted the homecoming dance from 9-11PM. The theme for the dance was Neon Night. At the dance, they sold glow sticks and snacks for $1-$5 dollars, and there was a backdrop where students could take pictures. The attire for the dance was neon casual, and students were able to dance and have fun with their friends.

Overall, homecoming 2023 was one to remember! We can’t wait to see what the rest of the year holds!
