Barlow welcomes Kathleen Gloss, the new student manager. Gloss was previously a campus monitor at Gresham High School. Gloss was asked about her hobbies and transition from Gresham High to Sam Barlow.

Working with the community at Barlow is a significant change for Gloss. Here at Barlow, she likes that kids take their education very seriously. Switching from Gresham High to Barlow is like “coming home” to Gloss. Both of her daughters attended Barlow, and her husband graduated from Barlow. Gloss comes from a big sports family, so being able to attend sports events is fantastic. Gloss looks forward to watching all the sports teams excel this year. She says, “Barlow is so blessed to have such awesome athletes.” Her favorite sport is soccer. She’s always been a HUGE soccer fan. She played in high school and college and was on a women’s team for a while. Gloss says, “Family-wise, both my daughters excelled in basketball.” Her family is a basketball family, but she will always be a huge soccer fan.

Gloss has been in the district since 1999. She was hired temporarily that year but then full-time in the 2000s. Gloss said the difference between the Gresham and Barlow communities was, “Barlow High is situated in a much more world setting, while Gresham High is deep downtown, so for the students, it’s easier for them to get places.” Working as a student manager has become something she has started to love more over time. She was a SpEd-EA (educational assistant) for years. She loved it because she could work one-on-one with kids, but this is even better because she can work with the whole school. Before being a student manager and working with young adults, Gloss worked for years for attorneys in downtown Portland. Gloss was asked about her favorite color and why it was her favorite color, and she said, “My zodiac sign is Taurus, and normally, the bull hates red. But I LOVE red.”

If Gloss had to describe herself as a person, she would say she’s pretty upbeat. “It is easier to be in a good mood than to make all the effort to be in a bad mood.” In Gloss’s free time, since she lives on a property up the mountain, her family likes to do a lot of outside activities. She also really likes to garden. She expands her garden in spring, summer, and even fall. When the bad weather comes, she’s always in her craft room. She has recently started to like puzzles.

Gloss is excited to work with the Barlow students and looks forward to the upcoming school years.
