We’ve all heard about Andrew Tate. Spreading very controversial, very misogynistic ideals, Tate earned his fame from sheer shock value. From saying women shouldn’t be able to drive or leave the house to saying that mental health isn’t real, it’s safe to say most of Tate’s popularity is due to negative attention.

In December of 2022, Tate and his brother were arrested in Romania for suspected human trafficking, forming an organized crime group, and rape allegations. Since then, they have had their custody extended three times, and they will both remain in Romania until the end of March.

Leading up to Tate being caught, he beefed online with Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. He had posted a Tweet bragging about the emissions his 33 cars let out, and Thunberg clapped back, starting a vicious online feud. Tate recorded a video in response to her Tweet, and in this video were pizza boxes that helped authorities locate and arrest him on a warrant that had already been put out for him.

The two women Tate and his brother had been staying with, Georgiana Nahgel and Luana Radu, will be released from custody and will be put under house arrest. They were arrested for being part of Tate’s organized crime group. Last week, it was reported by the BBC that the brothers had threatened legal action against at least one woman making rape and human trafficking allegations against the pair. In a cease-and-desist letter, the brothers threatened to sue the victim for $300 million in damages if she did not retract her statement.

Adding to the punishment of being detained, the Tate brothers are also enduring government seizures of both their land and their cars. So far, fifteen cars have been seized and more than ten properties belonging to the brothers or companies in their possession have also been seized. These will be used to pay for the damages inflicted onto the victims of the situation, and also used to pay for the investigation against the brothers themselves. Andrew Tate is expected to appeal against the seizures.

According to Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism, six victims have been brought forth in relation to the situation, including one of whom was violently sexually assaulted in March of 2022. The victims were said to be lured in using a “loverboy” method, meaning that they were tricked into being trafficked using the false sense of security of a relationship. The victims were transported to housing in Ilfov county, Romania, where they were coerced into making adult content.

In response to their arrest, the Tate brothers deny everything, and Andrew even suggested that after his arrest, he had been captured by Matrix agents in reference to beliefs built on the science fiction series, according to The Guardian.

One can only hope that this situation will be resolved, and that the outcome will shed light on what is right and wrong to Andrew Tate fans. Misogyny and violence towards women is not something that should be taken lightly, or even as a joke.
