It’s around the time of year when snow storms come around. Here are some tips to help prepare ahead of time for power outages and snow storms:

  1. Stock up on non-perishable foods.
  2. Get flashlights and extra batteries so you can see when it is dark, and ensure they are easily accessible.
  3. Make sure to have candles.
  4. Stock up on extra food, such as dried fruits, Granola bars, nuts, snack foods, cereal, bread, crackers, peanut butter, apples, and other food requiring no cooking or refrigeration.
  5. LOTS of bottled water.
  6. Bring any outdoor animals you have in before the winter weather.
  7. Charging portable chargers to keep essential devices like cell phones alive during a power outage.
  8. Keep any extra blankets nearby.
  9. Add snow chains on your car tires. If you need to leave your house, it’s better to be prepared to travel through the snow and not to get your vehicle stuck.
  10. Make sure you have gas in your car. If you have to stay in a hotel for the night, you want to be able to get there.
  11. Close off unneeded rooms to avoid wasting heat.
  12. Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors.
  13. Dress warmly. Keep layers of clothing on, including a jacket, to keep warm.
  14. Make sure you have a heating source.
  15. Make sure to keep your clothing dry to avoid freezing and to stay more comfortable and warm.

Now that you have tips for a snowstorm, do you feel prepared?

This year our budget was cut and we are only able to print three issues for the school year. Your donation will support the student journalists of Sam Barlow High School. Your contribution will allow us to purchase equipment such as one more camera, lenses, printing, and cover our annual website hosting costs as well costs for field trips.
