“The Devil Wears Prada 2” is a successful sequel to the first movie. It brings back all the characters we loved, along with a few new ones. The movie follows Andy Sachs, now an accomplished journalist, as she returns to work at Runway to lend the magazine greater credibility and attract new readers in the digital age. It follows a similar storyline to the original, with Andy ending up helping Miranda keep her job as the Editor-in-Chief. We get all of the same characters as before, but there is a new power dynamic, with Emily being an executive at Dior and Runway needing her advertising money. The movie was very enjoyable because it brought back familiar faces and storylines, changed the parts of the story that audiences didn’t like from the original, and had an interesting plot.
The best part of the movie was the return of familiar faces and storylines. Meryl Streep returns as Miranda Priestly, Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel. They also add so many details that hint at the original movie, like Hathaway wearing an updated version of Andy’s cerulean sweater in the end, the two identical blue belts in the background of a scene, Miranda’s use of the line, “That’s all,” and Miranda having to hang up her own coat. These small details add to the nostalgic feel of the movie and highlight that while it has been 20 years, no time has passed at all. It was also enjoyable to watch because the movie unfolds in a very similar way, starting in New York City and Runway, and shifting to taking place in Milan, while in the first movie, the end of it took place in Paris. The cast enjoyed returning to their old characters and discovering where they ended up 20 years in the future. Emily Blunt was excited to play Emily again and really likes the character’s personality. “But I adore playing her. I think that she’s a complete lunatic, clearly. But I find her sort of delicious and fun. I think it’s like now, she’s sort of even more insane because she has power.” Meryl Streep is known for not doing sequels for her movies, but she agreed to this one because of the realistic story. “There was one way we would sign on to do a sequel”, she tells BBC News, “If it spoke to the moment.” The cast thoroughly enjoyed coming back to their old characters, and the audiences appreciated the blend of nostalgia and modern ideas.
The best part of this movie was the changes it made from the first movie. The two main things that fans didn’t like about the original were Andy’s boyfriend, Nate, and Nigel not getting promoted. In the first movie, Miranda was portrayed as the villain, but as time went on, many people started to realize that the real villain was Nate. Nate was played by Adrian Grenier, and he didn’t return for the new film. Nate was Andy’s boyfriend in the original, and he initially supported her new job, but as she began working more and being successful, he stopped supporting her and pressured her to quit. While they do get back together at the end of the movie, Nate doesn’t make an appearance in the sequel, and Andy tells Emily that she hasn’t found the right person when Emily asks about her life. The sequel has Andy dating a luxury developer named Peter, and audiences like him more than Nate, especially because he supports Andy’s job. Many people considered Peter to be the better boyfriend, but some viewers thought he was uninteresting and didn’t drive the plot as Nate did. Even if he didn’t do much, fans enjoyed Andy being with someone who supported her career.
Another thing people disliked about the first movie was Nigel not getting his promotion, even though it is central to the plot and Miranda’s character. In the original, Nigel is betrayed by Miranda when she gives his dream job to her rival, Jacqueline Follet, to ensure that she stays secure as the Editor-in-Chief of Runway. The sequel has Nigel working closely with Miranda and her relying on his insight. In the end, Miranda realizes what she did to Nigel and how hard he has worked, and she gives him the recognition that he deserves. Audiences were very excited about this because it shows Miranda has grown, and it is nice to see Nigel getting what he wants, especially because of his dedication to Runway. Stanley Tucci likes that Nigel is still passionate about the magazine, but he has changed, too. “He wants (Runway) to be a thing of substance. But he’s at this point — you can sort of see where things are headed, even though he’ll do everything he can to stop them.” Tucci describes Nigel as “the foundation” of Runway.
The new plot of the movie was enjoyable, especially since it is a modern take on a classic movie. People appreciate that Andy has grown and changed, but in a way that makes it the perfect time for her to come back to Runway. Anne Hathaway portrayed Andy with subtle differences compared to the original, and it works within the modern plot. “We couldn’t rely on her being quite so wide-eyed this time,” she says. “She’s not become cynical, which is one of my favorite things about her. She really sees the best in situations, the best in people.” Andy left Runway at the end of the first movie, but now she is looking for a stable job that she enjoys, which brings her back to Runway. Audiences like the new plot and the growth of the characters, while still having a nostalgic feel.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is recommended for people who enjoyed the original and want to come back to the characters and their stories. This movie is a 9 out of 10 because it brings back all the old characters, changes problems from the first movie, and has an interesting storyline.
