Olivia Rodrigo’s third studio album, “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love”, was announced on April 2, 2026, and is set for release on June 12, 2026. “Girl So in Love” began by releasing the single “drop dead,” Rodrigo’s first release since her second album “GUTS” in 2023. The new era marks a shift from Rodrigo’s trademark purple to soft blue and lacy baby pink, leading fans to predict an album of romance and heartbreak.
“drop dead” begins the project with the adrenaline rush of falling in love. It went No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 upon its release, with the help of its six different versions—original, acoustic, sped-up, slowed-down, instrumental, and a cappella—and live performance at Coachella. The song’s success is also attributed to the celebrity drama surrounding it, as it’s rumored to be written about Rodrigo’s alleged ex-boyfriend, Louis Partridge, further supported by the song’s music video. To match the song’s lyrics, “You’re looking like an angel on the walls of Versailles,” filming took place in the Palace of Versailles, built by King Louis XIV, with fans believing the similarity in name further proves the song’s origins. The music video was filmed with vintage cameras, giving it a 2000s, dreamy, “delulu” feel.
“The song is about a really awesome first date, and so I always kind of knew that I wanted it to be the first step in the journey of ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.’ The journey definitely ebbs and flows and goes in lots of different places from here, but this is the first chapter,” Rodrigo explained on The Tonight Show.
With “drop dead,” Rodrigo became the first artist in history to debut their first three lead singles at #1. “I’m a lucky girl,” she shared.
This new single also marks a shift in theme in Rodrigo’s music. “I wanted this record to be about romantic love in a more positive sense, because, obviously, my last two [albums] were heartbroken and angsty—as they should be!—but I knew I wanted to write some love songs… but I also wanted to inject them with a little bit of sadness, longing, and melancholy.” She shared that all the love songs she’s attached to—like “Lovesong” by The Cure—carry an undertone of sadness and vulnerability that gives them deeper meaning.
Rodrigo’s inspiration for the album draws from her own experiences and love life, as well as fictional media. She says that “Sex and the City” characters Miranda and Steve inspired a track on the album, but didn’t disclose which song. She’s also dropped hints that a standout song on “Girl So in Love” would be about an insect, with fans speculating it could be called “ladybug” or “bumblebee” in reference to the bee graphics included in the promotional video for her collaboration with the FC Barcelona team.
A song Rodrigo hasn’t kept secret is “begged,” performed live on Saturday Night Live on May 3, 2026, and will be released on platforms on June 12. “begged” tells the story of being in love with someone, but the only way they love you back is if you beg them. The raw pain makes fans compare it to her early heartbreak songs on her debut album, “SOUR,” but with more developed, mature lyrics, proving that her time away from the studio only grew her talent. “She really had the audacity to smile cutely at the end after singing us the saddest f***ing song ever,” commented @JaredAshdown on YouTube.
Fans will probably forgive Rodrigo for the heartbreak, as she announced her world tour, The Unravled Tour, visiting the U.S. and Europe. Her Seattle shows will be on December 7 and 8, 2026, with tickets available on her website. Until then, fans can see that Olivia Rodrigo seems pretty successful for a girl on her third album, and if we have to wait any longer for it, we might drop dead.
