Barlow Concert Choir performing at the Oregon Music Educator Music Conference

Barlow’s Concert Choir was one of four high schools in the state selected to perform at the Oregon Educators Music Conference on January 13th. Unfortunately, because of the snowstorm, Barlow was the only high school that represented the state of Oregon, and their trip was cut short.

Concert Choir had to prepare an entirely new set of music for this opportunity. Since the choir is normally required to have all music ready by March, choir director Mrs. Schroeder made sure they focused and prepared for this huge opportunity. After graduating from Barlow in 1997, Mrs. Schroeder instantly knew that she wanted to keep being a part of the choir department and be a presence in all of her student’s lives. Mrs. Scroeder said, “This school and choir department gave me so much in my life I wanted to give back in some way.”

They performed five songs:“Look Out Above” by Dessa & Jocelyn Hagen with soloists Christina Chung and Ania Vilius, “The Unexpected Early Hour” by Reena Esmail from A Winter Breviary, “Spaséñiye, sodélal” by Pavel Tschesnokoff, “15. Nachtigall, sie singt” by Johannes Brahms from the Liebeslieder Waltzes featuring Christian Manarang on piano, and finally “Cells Planets” Words & music by Erika Lloyd and Arranged by Vince Peterson with soloists Jack Kohler, Jonathan Matheny, and Anthony Felipe.

Mrs. Schroeder comments, “This choir is special and different from other choirs that I’ve had because they truly do care about each other and work hard.”
