Some of the major pieces fans are excited about are the enemies. Among the returning cast, there are a few new additions. Mac Gargan has been cast as Michael Mando, otherwise known as Scorpion. This has been hinted at twice in Tom Holland’s first Spider-Man movie, Homecoming. Michael Mando was one of the Vulture’s men who was shown in jail during the post-credits scene. He was shown in battle with Spider-Man within the trailer. Another supervillain from the comics, Tombstone, is said to be played by Marvin Jones III, otherwise known as Krondon. A very interesting relationship was shown in the trailer between Spider-Man and the Punisher. Frank Castle was shown in an armored truck attempting some sort of crime. Spider-Man swiftly stopped him, while very obviously leaving him unharmed. It’s unclear what their dynamic will be in the full movie, but it isn’t typical.
The movie’s cast includes Sadie Sink, a well-known actor from shows like Stranger Things. It is unknown what her role will be in the film, but many theorize it will be the popular mutant Jean Grey, or others like her. If Jean Grey were included in this movie, it would greatly help integrate the X-Men and mutants into the upcoming films, such as Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Along with this theory, many believe the figure wearing a green hood, capable of swapping bodies, is Jean Grey. It is unknown whether she will be against Spider-Man or with him.
Another interesting inclusion is the mysterious ‘mutation’ Peter Parker undergoes. Shown falling out of an odd cocoon of sorts, he obtained natural webs instead of his synthetic webbing. There are speculations about which comics this might reference and whether it will be Venom, Man-Spider, or something else. The trailer even shows Peter reaching out to Bruce Banner for help with the strange mutations occurring in his body. This led to information about the three life cycles of a spider and a possible hint that he would get stronger. He is shown frequently fighting The Hand throughout the trailer. Easily recognized by their red outfits, the villain organization is a common enemy in films like Daredevil and Defenders.
Other interesting factors include the narrator of the trailer. Easily recognized as Keith David, many are confused about his role. Although we’ve received a bunch of information from the trailer about possible villains and the changes to Spider-Man’s lifestyle, there is still a lot of mystery to be uncovered in the full film.
