Richard Bruce Cheney, or Dick Cheney, was a businessman and the Vice President of the United States. Unfortunately, he died on November 3, 2025, at the age of 84 due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that causes inflammation of the air sacs, and a vascular disease affects the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients throughout your body and remove waste from your tissues. Prior to his death, he served as the 46th vice president of the United States. 

Dick Cheney was born on January 30, 1941. He was born in Nebraska and grew up in Casper, Wyoming. Cheney had a father named Richard Herbert Cheney, a soil conservation agent, and a mother named Marjorie Lauraine Dickey Cheney. Cheney went to Yale University in 1959 but couldn’t graduate. He later got his bachelor’s degree in 1965 and his master’s degree in 1966 in political science from the University of Wyoming. He later was a doctoral candidate at the University of Wisconsin. On August 29, 1964, he married Lynne Vincent. His wife received a doctorate in British Literature from the University of Wisconsin while Cheney worked as an aid to the Wisconsin government. Later, his wife served as chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1986 to 1993. According to Britannica, she was criticized by liberals for undermining the agency and by conservatives for opposing the closing of a controversial NEH-funded exhibit by photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in Cincinnati, Ohio. Cheney and his wife have 2 children. 

In 1968, Cheney moved to Washington, DC, to serve as a congressional fellow. At the beginning of 1969, he worked in the administration of Pres. Richard Nixon. Later, he left government services in 1973 and worked as a deputy assistant to President Cheney, who was elected as Wyoming’s House Representative for the first six terms in the United States House of Representatives in 1978. That same year, he suffered the first of multiple heart attacks. He underwent quadruple-bypass surgery in 1988. Cheney oversaw the U.S. military invasion of Panama and the participation of U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf War. In 1992, President Bush lost his reelection bid, and Cheney became a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. 

According to the George W. Bush White House Archives, Cheney was George Bush’s vice president from January 20, 2001, to January 20, 2009. While he was vice president in 2006, Cheney claimed that he accidentally shot Harry Whittington, a Texas attorney and a longtime Republican supporter, on February 11. The incident occurred when Whittington, 78 at the time, stepped into the line of fire as Cheney was swinging his shotgun to shoot a bird that had flushed from cover. Whittington was struck by birdshot pellets in his face, neck, and chest. He suffered a non-fatal heart attack a few days later due to a pellet lodged near his heart, but eventually recovered from his injuries. No criminal charges were filed against Cheney, and both men described the event as an accident. The incident generated significant media attention and discussion at the time, partly because the White House did not publicly disclose the accident until the afternoon of the following day. Whittington died in 2023 at the age of 95.

Dick Cheney was a person whom multiple people loved. Despite his bad habits or accidents, a lot of people look up to him.
