The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, has been terrorizing individuals since 2003. People live in fear constantly, wondering at what exact moment they will be ripped apart from their loved ones. Unfortunately, ICE has been spotted moving towards Gresham as of early October 2025.
Since President Donald J. Trump has taken office, he has called for the reinstatement of ICE to be deployed all across the country, urging them to get rid of as many immigrants as possible. But they’re not just taking foreigners; they are taking citizens of the United States by racially profiling them. As stated by aclu.org, “Racial profiling refers to the discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual’s race, ethnicity, religion, or national origin.”
Local Oregonians have been warning their communities and others around them to stay safe and be aware of unexpected ICE raids. They are standing up for their neighbors by protesting against ICE and making statements that the wrong people are being targeted. An article on KPTV.com reports that ICE agents have detained the wrong men in the Portland and Gresham area.
Recently, on October 28, 2025, KGW.com stated that a woman who was a citizen of the U.S. had been recently detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement for taking videos and pictures of them and their license plates near the Chick-fil-a in Gresham. She drove off shortly after taking the photos and noticed that ICE agents had been following her. She was later detained at a red light while the ICE agents were reportedly laughing at her, according to KGW.com.
Another sighting of ICE was reported on October 18, when two men in Gresham were falsely arrested by ICE. The men’s family claims that ICE agents were searching for a different person in their apartment. In accordance with KGW.com, the federal agents broke down the door and raised their weapons at all of the residents. When an agent asked if a man named “Israel” was at the door, houseowner Maricruz denied the question. Even though the agents never found the men they were looking for, they still detained the two men, Arturo and Napoleon, and took them to an immigration and customs enforcement facility in Portland.
There’s no predicting what the next move of ICE agents will be. If approached by them, you still have rights. immigrantjustice.org states that you do not have to open your door if they knock; they can’t come in without a warrant. You can also ask to speak to a lawyer, and you do not have to discuss your immigration or citizenship status with the police, immigration agents, or other officials.
If you are at risk of being detained by ICE, create a safety plan for you and your family. Memorize the phone numbers of your emergency contacts, have an attorney on standby, and if you have children, make sure to have someone to look out for them if you ever get detained or arrested. Following this plan may ensure the safety of you and your loved ones.
