Although it is no longer September, we are continuing to recognize the students selected as Students of the Month. We have eight students who won, two in each grade. From our incoming freshmen, Ayla Ulrich and Kelsey Cauble won. For sophomores, we have Reagan Pate and Taylor Ward. For our junior students of the month, we have Brynn Hardin and Ava Patchin. Lastly, our winning seniors are Lucy Chen and Devion Palmer-Rivas. These students deserve a huge congratulations, and here is a little about some of our winners: Freshman Kelsey Caudle was on the water polo team and is planning to join the swim team as well. Caudle’s favorite classes are ASL, because she has always wanted to learn it, and now that she is learning it, she thinks it’s very fun, and English, because she loves her teacher and thinks it is very easy to catch up. The teachers who have impacted her the most are Ms. Bernal and Ms. Toptchian because she thinks they are sweet, helpful, and she can go to them for anything. Caudle said she studied and went to teachers for help to be successful, and her advice to other students is, “Try your hardest and there is always next time, so don’t give up.”

Sophomore Taylor Ward played volleyball last year at Barlow. She’s also on our wrestling team, but not only Barlow’s; she also does club wrestling, which she has been very successful in. Ward’s favorite class is leadership because she can put herself out there, and she feels more included within the school, which she thinks is very fun. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Spencer because she feels like she can joke around and talk to her about anything, but when it comes to education and serious matters, Mrs. Spencer can also teach her. To be successful, Ward applies the discipline she learned from wrestling to her educational life as well. Lastly, she advised, “Do your homework, even if you don’t have a lot of time or even if it’s annoying.”

Junior Ava Patchin has been doing many things around our school: she is in band, on the ski team, robotics team, and in photography. Patchin’s favorite class is marine biology because she wants to become a marine biologist, so it’s very fascinating to her. The teacher who had the biggest impact on her was Mr. Toth, her graphic design teacher, because he has been super helpful and taught her a lot. Lastly, for advice to others, she said, “Stay on top of your work.”
Last but not least, senior Lucy Chen is very involved in our school. She participates in speech and debate, the National Honor Society, the National Art Honor Society, the chess club, and is a member of the robotics team. Chen said her favorite subject is math because she likes puzzles and solving problems. In addition to this, she said her favorite class is Writing 101 with Mr. Pohl. She has many favorite teachers, including Ms. Holliday. After all, she was able to help Chen and teach her math after COVID, Ms. Arnold, because she helped her with some mental issues and helped her grow, Mr. Pohl, Mr. Stewart, and Mr. Nelson, because they really helped Chen with essays, writing, and tips, also Mr. Pate, because he helped her understand and memorize history. Chen lastly said as advice to others, “Don’t procrastinate, do your work outside of class”.
