At approximately 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, a driver “intentionally rammed into” the Chipotle restaurant located at 920 Northeast Wood Village Drive with their car, according to KPTV and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities investigated the incident as first-degree criminal mischief because they believed the act to be intentional.
On November 26, KPTV reported the driver was identified as a 19-year-old man and had been arrested. After searching for the suspect based on witness reports, dispatch informed a deputy that the driver had called to turn himself in. The 19-year-old man was arrested in his home, and the Wood Village Chipotle banned the driver once he was identified.
According to KPTV, the driver entered the restaurant to confront his girlfriend and argued with her inside. He then left the restaurant and got into his girlfriend’s car, drove into the glass walls of the Chipotle building, then reversed and sped off. KGW News reported that the driver crashed into the building, “destroying several windows before driving away,” and the car “left behind a bumper,” but no serious structural damage was caused.
The incident did not cause any injuries or deaths to any customers or employees. The Wood Village Chipotle closed immediately afterwards for safety concerns, and clean up of the shattered glass and other structural damage occurred the same night. The restaurant will remain closed until reconstruction is complete, and a reopening date has not been announced by Chipotle. The damage to the building is estimated to cost about $5,000 by deputies.
