The last week before finals is always stressful. Students turn in last-minute assignments, and most importantly, prepare for their final exams. The Youth Action Council (YAC) saw this as an opportunity to hold a Mindfulness Week so that students can relax and reduce stress. The week was filled with a variety of activities. On Tuesday, the YAC set up tables outside the College and Career Center where students can color and design with their friends. On Wednesday, the highlight of the week, Caesar the llama visited the courtyard. Students were able to pose with the llama and their friends and cherish special moments. On Thursday, students had the opportunity to make origami. On Friday, the YAC club ends the week with a calm bracelet-making session. By the end of the week, students were both caught up with their work and felt less overwhelmed.
All of this could not have happened without the YAC co-presidents and hardworking members. Co-presidents Amanda Chen and Ephrata Ejamo organized the week carefully so that all students feel welcomed and included to participate in all activities. “We want to create an environment where everyone feels nurtured and supported,” Ejamo stated, especially during finals week, because it can be a stressful time for everyone. We want everyone to not only do well in their finals but also take care of themselves.” Ejamo shared that llama day was her favorite.
Chen emphasized that this week could not have happened successfully without the activities director, April Anderson, whose support and leadership helped activities run smoothly.
Mindfulness Week serves as a reminder that academics are important, but mental health is also essential. Keeping your mind at ease and relaxed can help you ace your exams and feel good about yourself. YAC hopes to continue to expand Mindfulness Week in the future and make it an annual event that students can look forward to.
