19-year-old Kimi Antonelli is capturing the attention of Formula 1 fans and other drivers as the 2026 season gets underway. In 2025, at just 18 years old, Antonelli secured his seat in Formula 1, racing for Mercedes. Last season, Mercedes did not do as well as they had hoped, and took their losses to the drawing board between the 2025 and 2026 seasons, and their hard work has already proven to pay off greatly. Mercedes has quickly gained dominance on the grid in the first three races, led by Antonelli and his teammate, George Russel.
On Sunday, March 8th, 2026, the first race of the season took place in Australia. Immediately, fans and F1 Teams began to notice something special about how the Mercedes and Ferrari cars were driving. While the 2026 regulations and how these two teams’ cars are working have sparked major controversy among fans, drivers, and entire teams, this has greatly benefited both Russel and Antonelli. When addressing the concerns of the regulations of the cars this season, Russel mentioned, “So I think there are lots of mixed views on the new regulations as a whole, but I do think the car regulations for everyone are definitely a step forward compared to what we’ve had for the past, what, eight years now.” It’s looking like Russel understands the concerns about the cars and the safety of everything as a whole, but he also seems to appreciate the change because it means more cars are advancing and moving forward from what F1 has had for an extensive period of time.
Starting the season off on a good note for Mercedes, Russel had won the Australian Grand Prix, earning them 25 points just from him, and Antonelli coming in second place right behind his teammate was a great contribution to the Mercedes team as well. Antonelli had expressed his excitement and anticipation for more races this season, and he also expressed his approval and appreciation for his car and the team in an interview leading up to the China Grand Prix after his practice session. His hard work had paid off when he found himself pushing for his first-place position early in the race. Antonelli had only raced one season up to this point and had never been P1 on the podium, but when watching the race live, fans could feel the excitement and belief that it would be the day he would get his first-ever first-place finish. Antonelli took an early lead in the race, leaving his teammate and opponents behind and winning by 5.55 seconds according to the Formula 1 website. On the podium, Antonelli expressed joy and appreciation for his win, and when interviewed while up on the stage, he even began to cry with joy, stating that one of his biggest dreams had come true. Another great opportunity presented itself at Suzuka, the Japan Grand Prix. Antonelli had battled with Russel and their opponents for some of the race, but when young racer Ollie Bearman had a scary crash, a safety car was released. While concerned for his opponent and friend’s well-being, this safety car created the perfect strategy for Antonelli and the Mercedes team. Antonelli was allowed a “free” pit stop while he was in the lead, and this greatly helped him hold the lead, ending with another first-place finish with a 13.72 gap between him and the second-place finisher, Oscar Piastri.
With his P2 finish and his two P1 finishes, Antonelli has now become the youngest championship leader in F1 history. While much of the season is still ahead, Antonelli’s future is looking good, and it’s safe to say that he has shown that he’s earned his exclusive seat at one of Mercedes top drivers. The rest of the 2026 F1 season will be a good one to follow, with many changes already underway relating to drivers, teams, and their cars.
